Archibald Gardner, my 2gg father

When I was a child, my mother felt it was important for us to know more about our family and the legacy that our ancestors have left us. She decided that she would read to us each week from The Life of Archibald Gardner by Delila Gardner Hughes. Mom lived in Afton, Wyoming for part of her childhood and she personally knew some of the family members mentioned in the book. Even at a young age, I could feel the love my mother had for her family. Because of the knowledge I gained about my family, I also came to love them. By the time I left for college, I decided to take a family history course for fun to learn more about how to conduct research. It only took a few months for me to decide to change my major and pursue family history as a career.

I am now an Accredited Genealogist, and I teach family history at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. I have decided to create a blog to begin sharing some of my research and knowledge about the Gardner family. My intent is to begin by writing about some of the places associated with Archibald's life.

  1. Hi Jill
I love your story and the Scottish countryside illustrations. One of my ancestors came from Stirlingshire and settled in Canada in 1820, eventually moving to Nauvoo and Utah when the time was right. He was in the British Navy at age 12 and has many stories that have been preserved about the battles he was in. I would love to go there and do what you have done with the camera.

ps, I can't seem to figure out how to get into the place to subscribe to the posts and comments. I Have discovered it is really easy to get something going that is not intended, even though we have been instructed to press buttons and figure it out. Someday I will wonder why it is so intimidating, but for now....

  3. Wonderful, you've put together this blog. I am a descendant of Archibald Gardner thru his wife Serena. I've read Delia Hughes book many times and visited with her ....granddaughter Serena Benish of Spanish Fork. Have you done further research back on the Gardner/Calinder/Callendar line? Thanks

  4. Sharon, the majority of my research has been done on Archibald, his wives and children, and his siblings. There's a significant amount of inaccurate information in the family and the traditional records, and my focus has been to clean those up before I try to push it back in time. I'll keep sharing what I have.
